After losing her parents, 14-year-old Annabel lives with her grandfather on a Caribbean island paradise. She goes to school and lives a seemingly happy life, also getting to swim with her best friend, a dolphin named Mitzy. Everything changes when her maternal grandparents arrive with an extremely shifty lawyer to bring her back to New York – who haven’t seen her in nearly a decade. It’s up to Annabel, and her friends, to figure out how to save the day and prove that love conquers all!

According to Dove.com Dolphin Island is Dove-approved for All Ages. Kids First gave Dolphin Island a Recommended age 7-18. I feel it might be aimed more at Tweens but was still interesting enough for myself as an adult. The movie itself has a slower paced than typical Hollywood films, but that seems to suit the Island lifestyle being portrayed.
Here are some of the things Dove stated, in regards to the movie (if wondering if acceptable for younger children).
- Faith: Grandmother prays that Anna’s life will be spared. [I did not find this film to be religious.]
- Integrity: Transformations from selfish motivation to heartfelt apologies.
- Sex: Kissing between adults.
- Language: Shut up [said 2x]
- Violence: Some well disguised punches/slaps between adults.
- Drugs / Nudity: None
- Other: Depictions of theft and deceit; manipulation by the Mr. Carbunkle.
While the film itself is not overtly Christian, there is a Discussion Guide available by the makers of the film to explore themes of courage, forgiveness, and faith if that is something you are interested in reading. There are scriptures, questions for discussion / personal reflection and devotional videos in each of the 5 sessions from Annette Lovrien Duncan, who plays Annabel’s grandmother in the film.
