VeggieTales

I was offered this book in exchange for my honest opinion AND to give away on my blog! There is one story for every single day of the year which has a Bible passage, short message and prayer. My toddler is only 2.5 years old and he is able to repeat the prayers after I say them. Each page has a different veggieTales character at the bottom as well. My son loves seeing the new pictures each day, and it’s short enough that it keeps his attention. I have the book for boys – not sure if there are different stories / characters in the one for girls as I have not seen that one.

About the Book by the author:

Baby Baby

Baby, Baby! is a short board book that has babies as the primary focus.  It uses lots of colours and kept my sons attention through the entire book!! It uses a rhyming pattern to make it more melodic when being read aloud – but every second page has the rhyme since it is short sentences. It also teaches/reminds children at the end that they are always loved by God – and also has a large reflective surface/mirror at the end.

The book is recommended for children 1-3 years old.

It was written by Diane Stortz and illustrated by Ailie Busby. It is currently available on Amazon.com for $7.99, or Amazon.ca for $10.99

I thought that this book was pretty awesome and ran a giveaway on my facebook page. It was open to anyone who commented, lived in Canada or the United States, and used the hashtag #BabyBaby.

Netopia

I initially wanted to review this book because, well, I used to be mega addicted to Neopets. Common… it was before Facebook people… what else was there to do in the year 2000 when you were not watching Pokemon?

I received a PDF version, so I am working my way through a little slower than normal as it’s much smaller and harder to see. So far, it’s a decent read, but I need to get a few more chapters in before I can let you know my full opinion on this book. It will be coming out on the 8th of Feb for everyone to buy however, so I wanted to give you the chance to check it out. It is currently on pre-order for 3.99

This is how the promoter summarized the book

Netopia tells the story of a future world, without a defined time or place, ruled by an advance social network called “Minds”. In this network users communicate through thoughts. You can create any reality and make any fantasy come true. In this perfect aesthetic-sterile world you can even customize the weather.

Memory drugs rerun the experiences of the users, who instead of warm human relationships prefer to raise neopets, cloned, engineered and malleable creatures such as red panda-cats, orca-penguins or angora-owls. But those connected to Minds quickly discover that this fantastic network comes with a particularly chilling price tag.

Captive DVD Giveaway

As some of you may remember, I did a review awhile ago on a book I received called Captive. You can check that one out HERE if you’ve forgotten.

Ashley Smith, a recovering drug-addict (who is barely clinging to the wagon) is abducted outside her home and held hostage by Brian Nichols.

In the movie, as with all films based on a book, there are some details missing. One early example is that in the book she goes to the store to get cigarettes, but in the movie she just gets a package from her car. While some things were changed or omitted, I did feel that the movie was fairly true to the novel.

I did not personally find this movie to be very fast paced, and I would not call this a movie theater film, I do feel its a good rental type movie, or one to own in your collection. Knowing that this is all based on a true story makes this so much more real for me.

Feel free to check out the OFFICIAL WEBSITE, in addition to checking them out on FACEBOOK and/or TWITTER.

Killer Pursuit: An Allison McNeil Thriller

#killerpursuit is the second novel featuring FBI agent Allison McNeil, but it’s written as a stand-alone so you do not have read the first book to enjoy it.

A book for mature high school readers and adults. There are scenes that describe memories of rape, torture and death. While there is not a lot of graphic details, there are sexual details and this would not be found in a high school library.

I’m not done the book yet, but I have enjoyed it so far!  There is a murder fairly quick into the beginning of the book (a call girl), plus police officers and “bad guys” who are killed as well.

I found it read a little like a soap opera – written in third person omniscient, the author jumps between Allison McNeal – an agent at the BAU (behavioural analysis unit), Samuel Kraw – mass murderer and psychopath, Libby who is trying to keep the tabloids free of political scandal and several others characters.

My only regret with this book is that the chapters are only numbered, not titled. Since we are jumping charters quite a bit, I would have loved to at least see the title be called the main characters name (Allison for example) so it was a little easier to follow (personally speaking).  I’ve read other books who did it that way, and I just found it to be easier… but it is always clear within the first page – if not first sentence – whose point of view/story the chapter is revolving around.

Available on Amazon.ca , Amazon.com and many other online stores (as well as in stores in paperback versions).

Authors synopsis

When a high-society call girl is murdered in her Georgetown home, investigators find two cameras hidden in the walls of her bedroom. One has its memory erased, presumably by the murderer. The second is connected to the Internet through an encrypted connection…and no-one knows who’s on the other end.

Special Agent Allison McNeil is asked by beleaguered FBI Director Clarence Mason to run an off-the-record investigation of the murder because of the murder’s similarity to a case she worked a year earlier. Allison knows the most direct path to apprehending the killer is to find the videos, but the rumors that the victim’s client list may have included Mason’s political enemies has her worried about the director’s motives. As she starts her investigation, she quickly discovers that she’s not the only one pursuing the videos. In fact, the most aggressive person racing against her might be the murderer himself.

Jeff Gunhus is the author of thriller and horror novels for adults and the middle grade/YA series, The Templar Chronicles. The first book, Jack Templar Monster Hunter, was written in an effort to get his reluctant reader eleven-year old son excited about reading. It worked and a new series was born. His books for adults have reached the Top 100 on Amazon and have been Foreword Reviews Book of the Year Finalists.

After his experience with his son, he is passionate about helping parents reach young reluctant readers and is active in child literacy issues. As a father of five, he leads an active lifestyle in Maryland with his wife Nicole by trying to constantly keep up with their kids. In rare moments of quiet, he can be found in the back of the City Dock Cafe in Annapolis working on his next novel.

Review by another person…

“A balanced blend of heart-pounding visuals and soul-searching introspection, Killer Within, Gunhus’s second novel, reaches beyond ordinary expectations for the genre. Gunhus exhibits a distinctive style typically found in seasoned authors like Dean Koontz and Stephen King.” —Foreword Clarion Reviews, 5 Stars

Relief from Lower Back Pain

#lowbackpainprogram was written by a fellow Canadian in Southern Ontario – actually in a town where I did some of my teaching placements — Aurora.

This Ebook is available through the website, Kindle, iBooks, Smashwords and Createspace.

I’ve done a few of these stretches so far, and am happy to say they have actually been helping. I am only about halfway as I’ve been trying out stretches as I go along. There are a lot of informational chapters at the beginning, but then it starts explaining how to do the stretches, with illustrations to show as well. I have been impressed by the information contained within the book, and also what I found on their site.

I visited their website, and was interested by a picture that said do NOT do crunches, sit ups or isolation exercises as they are hard on your back and can cause more damage than good! Check it out here.

Here is a message from the author

If you suffer from lower back pain, or know those who do, I would like to help you find greater relief and would appreciate your review and support.

My website currently receives approximately 45,000 visitors per month with over one thousand copies sold in its first year of operation. As of to date, I have received very positive and transformative reviews from all who have responded. My desire is to help those who suffer from this condition as I once suffered for over 10 years. My site and book are based on hard work, honesty and accountability.

Learn how to self treat chronic lower back pain easily and safely with this fully illustrated, instructional, low impact, pain-safe, exercise guide long term.
The majority of cases of chronic lower back pain are either directly related to, or worsened by specific muscle weaknesses and imbalances.

This specifically designed guide carefully teaches the correct methods to move, train and strengthen your body to properly relieve back pain. It uses non-surgical, non-medicinal, and safe methods for all ages and difficulties. It will help with your current pain, to prevent the return of pain, and to reduce your dependency on medication and surgery.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You will relieve your pain as you learn a series of short and effective exercises. The exercises will teach you how to treat and recondition several misunderstood and neglected areas of the lower back, hips and legs that can lead to lower back pain.

The Low Back Pain Program demonstrates effective, very low-risk exercises, stretches and movements to treat and prevent: lower back pain, backache, back spasms and more, long term with a careful, concise, ‘at home’ guide. This book contains 45 important exercises, over 170 detailed illustrations, 3 treatment and conditioning levels, 1 maintenance level and 4 progress charts.

The exercises condition and restore proper mobility and function for your lower back, hips, legs and pelvis, allowing painful areas time to heal and recover. The guide begins with 13 ‘Limited Mobility Exercises’ to improve your flexibility and address your stiffness and tightness that contribute to and worsen lower back pain. 19 ‘Progressive Exercises’ then, stimulate, develop and strengthen the muscles and joints necessary to protect the lower back from pain. 13 ‘Challenging Exercises’ are then taught to reinforce, correct and re-educate the muscles and joints to move and operate functionally and effectively to prevent recurrence of lower back pain. Upon completion of these exercises, 11 simple ‘Maintenance Exercises’ selected can then be seamlessly used throughout your daily routine as needed to keep your muscles optimally conditioned to protect your lower back from imbalances and pain.

The exercises are founded on the methods of exercise therapy, physiotherapy, and lower back pain and injury rehabilitation. They are intended for home use and can be performed at the users convenience and comfort level.

This guide provides those in pain, a much needed alternative to popular exercises and stretches that are recommended but still do not resolve the cause of the pain. It will benefit the user throughout their life as their physical needs change with age and lifestyle.
